OPW Teleforums enable
women and men throughout Australia to listen to and engage with an
expert guest speaker and other participants over a phone line, enabling discussion on contemporary issues relating to women’s
participation in the Church throughout Australia.
Each session is one hour in length and includes a 20 minute talk from a guest
speaker followed by an opportunity for questions and comments by the
participants. Teleforums are held from 5pm - 6pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT). The cost is $20 for each phone line and many people can gather around one line to listen.
Final Speaker for 2009 is:
Patricia Mowbray on 3 December with One Body in Christ: promoting full participation in the Church.
Patricia Mowbray is the Disability
Projects Officer in the Secretariat for Pastoral Life. Trish will
challenge us to consider,
“How do we, the Church, take the lead in forging a
new value system in our society, where everyone is valued, welcomed and
precious, instead of reflecting the current culture of death so
prevalent in today’s world?"

Final Teleforum 3 December |
|
Thursday, 20 November 2008 |
The Wollongong Diocesan Council for Australian Catholic Women met this week. It was energizing to hear of the plans they have for 2009. One exciting part of their action plan includes a gathering/forum for women in Parish life. Plans include offering workshops throughout the day focusing on enhancing and assisting women with the work they undertake in the parish. No doubt this will also provide an opportunity to acknowledge and affirm women for the part they play in the life and mission of the Church.

Women's Day of Prayer and Spirituality |
|
Friday, 14 November 2008 |
|
Last weekend I had the privilege of attendng the Women's Day of Prayer and Spirituality in Albury in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga.
The interactions and conversations I had with many women at this gatheringwas most energising. I am most grateful for the warm hospitality and the appreciation for my presence at this gathering. Caterine Slattery sgs, facilitated the day based on Benedictine Spirituality. Reflecting on images, prayers and scripture, participants were guided through a number of processes. It was evident by the large attendance at this gathering that women appreciated the opportunity to gather for prayer, reflections and fellowship.
Congratulations to the Wagga Wagga Council for Australian Catholic Women for their planning and organisation of this day.

Promoting
the dignity & equality of women through employment policies
Thursday 20 November 2008
Presented by Sue O'Connor
Sue O’Connor is the Director of the Office for Employment Relations, an
agency of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference. The OER develops,
promotes and maintains best practice employment relations policies,
procedures, practices, guidelines and manuals for implementation by the
Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and other Catholic employers. In
addition, the OER works with the Secretariat for Justice and Service,
with advice from the Australian Catholic Council for Employment
Relations in identifying and influencing public policy affecting
employment relations issues. Sue holds a Graduate Diploma of Labour Law
(Melbourne) and a Master of Business Administration (Deakin).
The Teleforum will include discussion of policies that promote the dignity and
equality of women in the workplace.
Food for thought: Are employment
policies alone sufficient? What is the role of government,
organisations and women themselves in promoting dignity and equality in
employment?
Presenter: Sue O’Connor
Time: 5pm – 6pm Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time

Dear Readers,
Last year the Office for the Participation of Women invited women throughout Australia to contribute to a prayer book. A Prayer Book Project Team was formed earlier this year and members of the team have had the task of deciding on the contents of the book. Members of the team have commented on the privilege of reading the prayers and in so doing, sharing the experiences and life journeys of the authors.
Unfortunately there are some contributors to the prayer book who have moved house or changed their email contact details and we are having difficulty contacting them. If you know the following women please ask them to contact Kimberly Davis on 0262019867 or 0448234775 or

What's Happening in Interfaith Dialogue? |
|
Friday, 17 October 2008 |
|
Yesterday Trish Madigan OP, Executive Officer of the Broken Bay Diocesan Ecumenical Commission was the guest speaker in the Teleforum Program. Trish highlighted Church teaching in relation to Interfaith Dialogue, the Types of Dialogue and suggested Stages of Dialogue in her presentation. Given statements made by the Council of Florence in 1442 and Pope Pius in 1863, Trish remarked on the amazing journey that has occurred in the Catholic Church in the 20th century. In general, the recent statements from Church documents encourage all Catholics to work with others. John Paul II and Benedict XVI continued to put this vision of dialogue before us. Trish challenged us by asking the question: Are we responding to this vision in an adequate way? ......
This week the Office for the Participation of Women welcomed members of the Ursuline General Council in Rome to Canberra. Sr Alice Montgomery osu (England) and Sr Somchitr Krongboonsri osu (Thailand) have been visiting the Australian Ursuline Province and were most interested in hearing of the work of the OPW.

This week the OPW website includes a number of changes. A new section, 'OPW Programs' will outline projects from the office including the Interfaith Fellowship, Teleforums, Diocesan Meetings and the Prayer Book Project. Teleforum registration is now available online and previous discussions can be accessed via Podcast.
The next teleforum will be held on Thursday 16 October between 5 and 6pm AEDT on the topic, What's Happening in Interfaith Relations?
Trish Madigan OP
will share her experience of initiating projects and contributing to
the building up of interfaith relations in many contexts in Australia.
As well as affirming the Christian call to collaborate with other
believers in the fostering of social justice, peace and freedom Trish
believes the spirituality of inter-religious dialogue has the potential
to lead us more deeply into the mystery of the Trinity – in which God’s
unity is expressed in and through the distinction and otherness of
persons.
The opportunity to hear the experiences of many people adds to the
success of the teleforum program so get a group together and register
so we can hear your story!
Registration closes on 13 October.

|
Tuesday, 07 October 2008 |
This week representatives from Médecins Sans Frontières were in
Canberra raising public awareness of the plight of refugees through
their REFUGEE CAMP IN YOUR CITY project. Médecins Sans Frontières is
an independent organization for medical-humanitarian aid which provides
victims of disease, natural or manmade disasters, or armed conflict,
access to urgently needed medical care.
This project aims to create a better understanding of the vulnerability
of life for displaced people and refugees who have fled their homes -
there are some 42 million people who have made such a journey in search
of safety from armed conflict.

Eradicating Human Trafficking |
|
Friday, 19 September 2008 |
Pauline Coll sgs, National Chair, Australian Catholic Religious Against Trafficking in Humans (ACRATH), presented an informative session in Canberra on Wednesday evening. Pauline, together with Jennifer Burn, Senior Lecturer in Law, UTS and Mary Mooney csb are currently in Canberra to lobby Members of Parliament regarding the plight of women and men being trafficked in Australia. Their two main aims of the week-long Canberra trip are to lobby for changes to the visa regulations applied to people who are trafficked and to ensure adequate services are provided once a person has been recognized as trafficked.
During Pauline’s talk she challenged all of us to be involved in eradicating human trafficking. She suggested we can do this by:
- Educating yourself – learn more about the issue
- Educate others – talk to your friends about it
- Become and Anti-Trafficking lobbyist – write a letter
or sign a petition
- Shop Fair Trade – purchase your gifts, tea, coffee
and chocolate from Fair Trade outlets
